Cosmos are just so lovely on their own, but when you add a tiny jewel of a bee you get something just enchanting!
This is a Virescent Green Metallic Bee...a little lady bee to be exact.
She lives in meadows and gardens drinking nectar. She brings nectar and pollen back to her larva in the underground nest....
One bee usually guards the entrance to the nest by placing its head level with the soil surface acting as a plug...now doesn't that sound like a fun job to have???
I love bees...but I'm also glad I'm not one!
There is your entomology lesson for the day...
Now go out and see what kind of treasures you can find in your yard and garden!

I have never seen a green bee like that before.
I liked my entymology lesson!

Love this!
One of my biologist x hubby's favorite 'cycle' story came from Darwin, who wrote that the bumble bee population (at least in rural England) went up in direct proportion to the number of 'old ladies' in the area. Reasoning: old maids (er - ladies) keep CATS, cats eat MICE, Mice eat the contents of Bumble bee nests! Ergo - with fewer mice, more bumble bees . . . .

she is a beauty. i have some tiny bees on my sunflower heads that sleep in them at night. i will have to take a closer look to see what type they are. your little lady bee is so beautiful and enjoying herself on that cosmos.
